Website bandwidth calculator: monthly data transfer, peak traffic and hosting size

Monthly bandwidth = visitors × pages per visit × average page size, plus downloads and API traffic. A CDN serves most images, scripts and styles from cache, so the origin server only transfers the rest. Peak load is average page views per second multiplied by a peak factor, typically 3–5× for sites with daily traffic spikes. Concurrent users ≈ visits per second × average visit length.

Result

Bandwidth per month

732 GB

About 732 GB of data transfer a month (146 GB from your server after the CDN), with peaks of about 0.46 page views per second.

Small load: good shared or managed hosting, or a small cloud server, will handle this comfortably.

Monthly data transfer
  • Served by CDN 586 GB
  • Served by origin server 146 GB

Peak throughput 9.1 Mbps

  • Each page view also makes many asset requests (images, scripts, fonts). Most are cached by the browser or CDN, so size servers on page views and dynamic requests.

With these inputs:

  • Visits per month: 100,000
  • Pages per visit: 3
  • Average page size: 2.5 MB
  • Downloads, video & API traffic per month: 0 GB
  • Traffic served by a CDN: 80%
  • Average visit length: 3 minutes
  • Peak vs average traffic: 4 ×
  • Currency: USD ($)
  • Data transfer price per GB: 0.09

How to reduce bandwidth and hosting cost

  • Serve images in modern formats (WebP, AVIF) at the size they are displayed.
  • Lazy-load images and videos below the fold.
  • Put a CDN in front of the site and set long cache lifetimes for static files.
  • Compress text responses with Brotli or gzip.
  • Remove unused scripts, fonts and third-party tags.

FAQ

Website bandwidth & hosting calculator questions

How much bandwidth does my website need? +

Multiply monthly visits by pages per visit and average page size. 100,000 visits × 3 pages × 2.5 MB is about 730 GB a month.

What is the difference between bandwidth and data transfer? +

Hosts often use "bandwidth" to mean monthly data transfer in GB. Strictly, bandwidth is the maximum transfer speed, shown here as peak Mbps.

Does a CDN reduce hosting costs? +

Yes. It serves cached files from servers near visitors, reducing data transfer and load on your origin server, and usually makes pages faster.

How many visitors can a server handle? +

It depends on how much work each page needs. With page caching, even a small server can handle dozens of page views per second; uncached, database-heavy pages need far more capacity.
