# Monolith vs microservices: which architecture should you choose?

> A monolith is one application deployed as a single unit: simpler to build, test and run, and the right start for most products and small teams. Microservices split the system into independently deployed services, letting large teams ship separately and scale parts independently, but adding network, data and operations complexity. Start with a modular monolith; extract services when a clear need appears.

Microservices solve organisational scale problems. Most products are better served by a well-structured monolith first.

- **Monolith:** Simple, cheaper to run
- **Microservices:** Independent teams and scaling
- **Best start:** Modular monolith
- **Hidden cost:** DevOps and observability for services

- **Monolith:** You are building a new product, have one or a few teams, and want speed, simplicity and lower hosting and operations costs.
- **Microservices:** Several teams need to deploy independently, parts of the system have very different scaling needs, or a module must be isolated for reliability or compliance.

## Comparison

| Factor | Monolith | Microservices |
|---|---|---|
| Build cost | Lower | Higher |
| Operations | One deployment, simple hosting | Many deployments, containers, service discovery |
| Scaling | Scale the whole app | Scale individual services |
| Team fit | One or a few teams | Many teams owning services |
| Data | One database, simple transactions | Database per service, eventual consistency |
| Debugging | Straightforward | Needs distributed tracing and logging |
| Failure isolation | One bug can affect all | Failures can be contained |

## The modular monolith

A modular monolith keeps one deployment but separates code into clear modules, such as billing, orders and users, with strict boundaries. It keeps things simple now and makes extracting a service later much easier. This is our default for new products, including [multi-tenant SaaS platforms](https://infikeytechnologies.com/industries/saas/multi-tenant-saas-development).

## Cost of getting it wrong

Premature microservices multiply hosting, DevOps and debugging costs. A tangled monolith builds technical debt that slows every feature. Estimate the cost of debt with the [technical debt cost calculator](https://infikeytechnologies.com/tools/technical-debt-cost-calculator), and see [Laravel vs Node.js](https://infikeytechnologies.com/compare/laravel-vs-nodejs) and [AWS vs Azure vs Google Cloud](https://infikeytechnologies.com/compare/aws-vs-azure-vs-google-cloud) for related stack choices.

## Frequently asked questions

### Do we need microservices to scale?

Usually not. Well-built monoliths serve very large user bases with caching, database tuning and horizontal scaling. Microservices mainly help when many teams work on one system.

### Can you break our monolith into microservices?

Yes, gradually. We extract one service at a time where there is a clear benefit, keeping the system running throughout.

### Is serverless the same as microservices?

No. Serverless is a hosting model where the cloud runs your functions on demand. It can be used with either architecture.
